Story

Call it hibiscus or China rose or plain joba, the flower will always be her first favourite. Although a part of everyday arrangements, there was something exquisite about it. Her mother called it the jewel of her garden. But she knew it as the year-round spring of joy. You know how children are inducted into family rituals? She too was. Every Thursday, before leaving for school, she stepped out into the front garden with a cosy wicker basket in tow. She had to pick fresh hibiscus flowers, the bright red ones. Along with tagar or the pinwheel flower and a few strands of Durva grass. Who knew that such weekly meets would kindle a long-lasting relationship?!
